Building economies closely relate to the development of urban economies. Experts in this session will focus on the interactions between building and urban economies, discuss how to stimulate regional economies with real estate investment and sustainable business models, and how to promote building economies with prospective urban planning, and optimising urban resource allocation.

  • How do building economy urban economy interact and influence each other?

Cities have long been the world’s economic dynamos, but today the speed and scale of their expansion are unprecedented. Through a combination of consumption and investment in physical capital, growing cities could inject up to $30 trillion a year into the world economy by 2025. Understanding cities and their shifting demographics is critical to reaching urban consumers and to preparing for the challenges that will arise from increasing demand for capital to invest in new housing, office buildings, and port capacity.

微信图片_20181018165733.jpg我们生活在一个城市化的时代。

Living in the City

We live in an age of urbanization. For the past ten years, more than half of the world’s population has lived in cities. Moreover, there’s no end in sight for this migration of people to urban areas. On the contrary, the latest UN forecast predicts that 70 percent of the world’s population will be living in cities by 2050. At that point, the world’s total urban population will be almost equal to the earth’s entire population today. Within a mere century, the number of people living in big cities will have grown from one billion to almost six billion. This trend will also lead to the rise of more and more megacities — cities that have over ten million inhabitants. Whereas there were 28 megacities in 2014, there are expected to be 41 by 2030, and demands on infrastructures will grow accordingly.

Many cities are already suffering from housing shortages, overstretched infrastructures, and uncertain water and energy supplies. Added to this is the increasing risk of natural disasters resulting from climate change. Emissions from big cities, in particular from the transportation sector, are contributing considerably to this development.

How technologies change the city – A version of tomorrow’s cities?

The Blockchain explained: What it is and isn’t, and why it matters

The Fourth Industrial Revolution includes a new phase of blockchain-enabled innovation. The computational architecture of blockchain technology creates a wide range of potential uses. For example, by providing an immutable, distributed ledger, it can help to facilitate peer-to-peer payments, manage records, track physical objects and transfer value via smart contracts, all without a third party or manual reconciliation.

During 2017 and 2018, blockchain has received considerable hype regarding its potential to create wide-reaching impact, with proponents projecting that it could account for as much as 10% of global GDP by 2025. There has also been considerable scepticism with regard to its performance and scalability that has thus far kept crypto-networks from seriously disrupting centralized systems. During the next few years, the focus will likely be on fixing these technical limitations and addressing regulatory and legal challenges.

As the technology matures, there is both a challenge and an opportunity to realize blockchain’s potential – not just for finance or industry, but for people and the planet. This analysis explores the opportunity to harness blockchain to address environmental challenges, including climate change, loss of biosphere integrity and water scarcity.

Finance plays an important role in city development. China will significantly broaden market access, and liberalise limitations on foreign shares in banks, securities and the insurance industry. At the same time by opening wider to the outside world, we will expand the business scope of foreign financial institutions in China and expand the areas of cooperation between Chinese and foreign financial markets. We can predict that a more open financial market will bring more investment to accelerate urban development. How to attract and utilise these investments is crucial for all urban development participants.
